Everyone probably loves butter. This is why butter is one of the most used ingredients in cooking and baking. From your cakes down to your toasted bread, butter can be added. And that’s something you shouldn’t be ashamed of. Undeniably, butter makes everything taste better.
However, coconut oil has gained popularity, and many have been using coconut oil as an alternative to butter.
Is coconut oil better for you than butter?
Let’s try not to be biased and compare these two ingredients.
If you’re thinking that coconut oil is ‘healthier’ and butter is bad, and you have to stop using it, well, you’re wrong.
This is one misleading information about the two ingredients. There are some reasons why people are slowly switching to using coconut oil instead of butter.
Both contain medium fatty acids or MCT’s. However, there’s a difference in the amount of MCT’s in coconut oil and butter. Coconut oil contains about 50% MCTs while butter is only 15%.
These MCT’s are fats that are easily digested in your body. When the body processes these fats, they turn into energy which is immediately used for your body to function well.
In simple terms, more MCTs in coconut oil are processed than in butter which means more energy for your body.
Some people are allergic to dairy products. This makes coconut oil a better substitute. It’s natural and may contain no allergens that cause an allergic reaction when consumed.
Palmitic acid is the main fatty acid in butter. This type of fats may tend to form plaque in your arteries which may cause a heart disease. On the other hand, coconut oil consists mainly of lauric acid which helps boost your immune system.
Butter doesn’t offer these benefits. But it doesn’t imply that butter is already bad for your health. It’s just that health benefits from using coconut oil exceed the health benefits of butter.
Don’t worry! You can still experience the savory goodness of both butter and coconut oil. Just be careful how much butter or coconut oil you’re using when cooking or baking. Remember, too much of something is bad enough.
